Twitter Write-Up (History of Twitter)
Twitter did not reach the pinnacle of “founder-led” culture. It fell short. The past founders and first employees with a hacker mindset, CEO betrayals, and stability of the company made it impossible to build a great culture. I think that’s why Jack wrote, “I’ve worked hard to ensure this company can break away from its founding and founders.”
This will be the first “smooth” CEO transition without anyone being backstabbed.

The two men Adams and Jefferson (2nd and 3rd USA presidents 1797-1809) each manned the dual ends of philosophical spectrum as to governance: Adams the ambitious federalist and Jefferson the states’ rights zealot. The two had abiding respect for one another even as lifetime rivals following their moment of unity when breaking from the UK in July, 1776 . Their opposing views exemplified the delicate but amazingly firm balance of opposing beliefs.
This later ripened into modern America, beacon of the concept of the “marketplace of ideas” where competing views would vie for primacy via speech and elections, instead of having factions fight bloody, internecine sectarian wars under men who simply symbolised/epitomised a side. That is how the US manifested its credo of being a nation of “laws” and not of men.
Applying these principles, peaceful transfers of power (the first being from founder Washington to Adams and the next being from Adams to Jefferson) were in their day dazzling novelties that revolutionised the standards of governance and civilisation across the Western world. No other nation had been able to fully shake the custom of leadership by royalty, and power devolved by blood or conquest until USA. King George III shook his head in amazement at these early bloodless transfers of power in former American colonies, as did other monarchs observing the new nation from afar.
The exquisite balance of the new US nation and its soul-deep blessing by Providence found its culmination in this unforgettable and chilling coincidence: BOTH Adams and Jefferson while mutually respectful rivals through their adult lives had separate quarters in different regions - (Adams to the North and Jefferson to the South) but both died THE SAME DAY in their separate regions of unrelated causes. That day was 4 July 1826, EXACTLY 50 years to the day after the two had momentarily joined forces to make their Declaration of Independence from the UK. So they were not only in balance as rivals during life, for half a century following their unifying moment, but in perfect balance at their deaths, and each on the date honouring their lifetime’s most significant act at height of their erstwhile alliance. One cannae make up such coincidence! To think this occurred naturally chills the bones. To realise it happened in perfect balance warms the heart. How else could God salute these two and underscore success of their dual mission to embrace a principle of balance without favour?
No wonder Nostradamus’ predictions about the New World called America “Kingdom of Balance”. Food for thought from a distance.
